Second day of our little Peak District excursion. Started off as a nice frosty morning but by the time we met with UF for a walk around Burbage Rocks, we were in deep thick clouds.
We walked along Millstone Edge and past Over Owler Tor and saw nothing. We decided to skip Carl Wark as it didn’t seem worth the trouble in swirling fog.
We decided to have an early lunch on Higger Tor. While we brewed up the wind picked up a bit and seemed to clear the fog. We were treated to some views across the broad valley of Burbage Brook and Burbage Rocks.
By the time we set off the weather had improved markedly. There was even some watery sunshine.
Looking back to Higger Tor and Carl Wark.
As it was now quite cold and windy we decided to stay low and head down the path alongside Burbage Brook.
None of us had ever walked along by the river so thought it would make a pleasant – and warmer – change.
Heading down the muddy path (all paths are muddy these days) down to the river.
An inspired decision as its really rather lovely down by the river.
Lots of of small cascades and green swathes of turf. Most unlike the Dark Peak.
Its always fun to follow a river, small or large.
Apart from a few sections of squelching bog and mud – some of which required some delicate moves and hanging from fences to bypass, it was an excellent walk.
Th weather continued to improve as we walked. Some very decent views back to Higger Tor.
The lower part of the valley towards Burbage Bridge
A lovely little bridge near the main track.
Carl Wark and Higger Tor (and blue sky!)
From an extremely gloomy start it had turned into a really fine afternoon.
We crossed the main road and followed the Burbage Brook back towards the van.
Some lovely winter shots dark clouds and low angled sunlight.
As ever, dodging the slimy mud was the biggest challenge.
I used to love walking this stretch when we lived in Derbyshire many years ago. The path runs right next to the river through a delightful meadow studded with trees.
We reached the van and decided on brew and cake before the long journey home.
We even had time for a quick wander back out to Millstone Edge – this time we had the view!
Another fine weekend away in the Peak District – really enjoying re-acquainting myself with the area over the past couple of years.
That does look really nice. I think the weather is mixed most days now and I’m really wondering if it will dry out at all this year – everywhere is a sea of wet mud or deep bogs!
That photo of the lone tree with the dark sky and low-angled sun is a belter – those are my favourite types of photos but I don’t get chance to snap that many myself. I have got a couple of good ones but there have been too many days where I’ve seen them but not had my camera with me!

I think it will take several weeks of sunny dry weather to even get close to drying things out and probably years, maybe never for some busy paths to properly recover. I’ve never seen paths I use regularly so badly churned up.

same here – I was thinking it would take probably about 6 months around here and I really don’t think we’ll get 6 dry months

Love that section at the end with the flagged path through the silver birch trees and heather, looks gorgeous. Looking at the photos it must have been a cold day as you all looked wrapped up, a contrast to Sunday where I was wearing a tshirt only on the coastal path and have a bit of a tan!!

Its a cracking walk this one and I love this area, so many small bridges, streams, edges and rock formations. We’ve had hail and thunderstorms here today – I wondering if, when or ever stop raining!

We’ve got snow on the moors at the moment, was kind of hoping it may last or at least fall again Thursday night (which it is planned to do)

Doesn’t seem to be any on the fells around Silverdale at the moment (I’m up visiting Mark for the weekend) but I’m off out for a walk later and I might get a view of Lakeland fells from there. Tons of fresh snow in Scotland apparently

I’ve been out slithering about today. At this rate we are going to have to start wearing some sort of mud-crampons to keep from constantly keeling over. It has to be said, you got some very contrasting shots from your initially unpromising day.

We had a couple of dry days over the weekend but its rained heavily every day since then. No way you can walk anywhere near the house without wellies!
Pretty good day in the end after wandering about in cold mist for the first hour. Really like it up there . Need to find a meet up spot in the Peak that might be do-able for your to join us
