Slow Return to Outdoor Life   18 comments

That nasty bout of flu stuck with me for three weeks and really hit me for six (I still have a nagging cough four weeks on). Last weekend I tentatively ventured out for a day outdoors for the first time since I got back from my ski trip. A short trip that I’ve done may times before but one of my favourite local walks

Hatterall

A decent weather forecast and the cold weather had been replaced by almost spring-like conditions

Through Cwmyoy village and my favourite wonky church

Ysgyryd Fawr as always dominates the view to the south

Wild ponies on the summit

And the beautiful Vale of Ewyas to the north

We found a relatively sheltered spot on the summit for a bite to eat and a chat about TJS impending choice of University. When we set off the fickle British weather delivered a punch. The skies had gone very dark and within minutes it was raining, a cold slanting rain that replaced the spring conditions of earlier with a taste of winter. After a soaking, the skies cleared and all was sunny again

The late afternoon views were rather fine

Only 6 miles but I was completely wiped out when I got back to the car. Hopefully I can recover some of my lost fitness over the coming weeks now I seem to be over the bug. Always good to use an old favourite to start over

I’m quite taken with the idea of heading our for a walk late Friday after tea. Me and TJS had a go last week but the weather let us down and we copped the only cloudy and damp spell of the weekend. Tonight was much better with a beautiful warm summers evening up on Ysgyryd Fawr. I’ve blogged this walk many times so just I’ll just let the photos do the talking this time

Post Walk Amble – Bryn Arw   6 comments

Talking a walk after work is a perfect way to unwind and my drive home from Bristol where I work has plenty of options. Over the past couple of years I don’t seem to have managed it as much as I should. A couple of weeks back I got an opportunity and grabbed it.

Bryn Arw is one of my favourites and I’ve walked and blogged this route many times. Its perfect for an after work jaunt. Relatively short but with a small mountain feel and superb views.

It does have a short road section but at this time of year the hedgerows are alive with wild flowers so its hardly a chore. Best of all and for reasons I can’t explain its deserted. I can’t recall seeing more than a couple of other people in the many times I’ve been up here and on an evening as grand as this one I still found it surprising that I saw no-one else.

Ysgyryd Fawr always catches the eye

It was bright and sunny but cooler than it looked but I managed to find a sheltered spot for the obligatory mountain top cuppa

The Sugar Loaf also looks good from the summit ridge

And as this seems to be the age of the selfie……

Looking back at these photos I’m amazed again at the marvel of modern technology. All these photos were taken with my smartphone. Amazing clarity and image quality from such a small multi-purpose device

Makes the long days at work feel a little less of a drag when you can take in a walk as good as this on the way home

Evening (and Weekend) Rambling   4 comments

Finally managed to get in some evening walks as well as Sunday stroll. All routes and hills I’ve done many times so just a few photos to prove I don’t sit in front of the TV every evening, just most of them 🙂

I drive past all these hills on my home from work so nice to climb them from time to time after a long day in a crappy office doing a crappy job. Equally, as they are on my way home I should do it more often. But there are so many great TV shows around I need watch though…….

Another classic short walk, high start, no climbing, great views, interesting industrial archeology, name that rhymes with orange. What more do you need from a days walk.

Interestingly we did the same walk almost exactly a year ago in exactly the same weather. Funny old world.

Christmas Eve on The Sugar Loaf   4 comments

What better way to prepare for a day at home cooking, fannying about with spanners putting toys together and getting fat than a walk in the mountains

A lazy day. We got up late and had an early lunch before heading out. A short walk with no navigational pressure was in order so the classic Sugar Loaf circuit was on Santa’s list

A walk I’ve done and blogged many times if you look for it on the blog and need some words and maps

Or in other words I’m too lazy to write it up – again.

So, use your imagination and make up your own words, don’t just sit there relying on me to write them, I’m busy. Well actually I’m not busy but you get the idea. A couple of beers and I’ve gone all esoteric 🙂

Happy Christmas – for 6 weeks ago. A bit late but its the thought that counts.

Small hills with disproportionately big views – Bryn Arw   4 comments

I like the title of this post as a possible title for a book I will never write. I’ve developed quite a fondness for small hills and this one on my doorstep is real favourite. Located just on the fringes of the Black Mountains, themselves relatively quiet, this hill I guess sees few visitors. I’ve been up many times and rarely seen anyone on its summit or lower slopes.

I’ve posted walks up here a couple of times before (read a post here with more words), so here a few pictures from a winter day when we all grabbed a short walk between the rains that swamped the UK back in January

bryn arw, ysgyryd fawr, sugar loaf, betwsI dropped the family off where the paths starts and took the car to the other end. The road back is nice and quiet and I enjoyed the walk, it was streaming with rain water!
